We strive to farrow two litters a year and sell a handful of registered breeding stock and retail the rest to restaurants, community members and members of our health center. Mom, dad and piglets are featured below. If you are interested in fresh, heritage pork, pricing is as follows:
Whole Pigs:
The price for a whole pig is $4/lb + processing (processed at Mt. Airy Meat Locker), based on final hanging weight at the butcher after slaughter. A typical pig hangs at 185 lbs so the pig cost is typically $720. The average yield is about 125 lbs of classic cuts and about 35 lbs of oddments such as bones, tail, head, fat, etc. This comes out to a typical price of about $5.93/lb. A whole pig needs about 3 cubic feet of freezer space about the size of 3 milk crates.
Half Pigs:
The price for a half pig is $5.00/lb based on final hanging weight at the butcher after slaughter. A typical half pig hangs at 90 lbs so the pig cost is typically $580 or so. A half pig is about two cubic-feet depending on packing in the boxes. We strongly recommend finding a friend to share a single whole pig order with to get he best price – there is a big savings between whole and half pig pricing per pound. You submit one cut sheet and get a big savings when you share.
Local Pickup:
You can pick up your meat here at Bird House Farm or at Kensington Sweat Shop.
